Be a Lifeline: Why Platelet Donation Matters for Sickle Cell Warriors

For our sickle cell warriors, transfusions aren’t just treatment – they’re often urgent lifelines. While whole blood is vital, platelet donation is especially critical during a shortage!

Why Platelets?

Platelet Needs (Uncommon):

  • Sickle cell disease primarily affects red blood cells, not platelets. Patients usually have normal or even elevated platelet counts.
  • Situations Where Platelets Might Be Needed (Infrequent):
  • Overwhelming Infection/Sepsis:
    Can cause low platelets (thrombocytopenia).
  • Severe Splenic Sequestration or
Infarction: Can trap or destroy platelets.
  • Liver Dysfunction: Advanced liver complications (e.g., from iron overload or viral hepatitis) can impair platelet production.
  • Major Surgery/Bleeding: If significant bleeding occurs during complex surgery, platelets might be needed as part of overall blood product support, but this is not specific to sickle cell.

Platelets help control bleeding, support healing, and can be lifesaving during critical moments.

Unlike whole blood donations.

The Need is Constant & Urgent:

🩸 Platelets expire in just 5-7 days – so donations are always needed.

🩸 Unlike whole blood, platelets can be donated every 2 weeks!

You Can Make a Difference:

✅ A single platelet donation can help multiple patients.

✅ The process is safe, comfortable, and takes about 90 minutes.

✅ Your platelets could save a warrior from a life-threatening crisis.

While your heroic whole blood donations are the frontline defense for sickle cell warriors, your platelet donations in between are the vital safety net, ready to catch them during unexpected storms.
